Switzerland has such perfect seasons that I absolutely love shooting photo sessions outdoors in the summer. With so much of the natural beauty of the Alps accessible to all, even my littlest clients can take advantage of a spectacular backdrop. Here are some of my favourite outdoor summer photo locations in Switzerland.
Photos by the lake
Whether it’s the rustic charm of Les Grangettes nature reserve in Villeneuve, the elegance of the Montreux Riviera or the hidden beaches between Vevey and Lausanne, photographing down by the water is always a favourite. I like to capture the atmosphere with environmental shots of my families walking along the shore, skimming stones or watching the wildlife. The long summer evenings make for beautiful light for romantic couple’s portraits as the sun sets over Geneva. With such a variety of different places, we can capture the play, relaxation and calm of just being in nature.
Photos in the mountains
By the end of June, Villars-Gryon have reopened for the summer season and the train or télécabine will take you right up into the mountains. When the flowers have started to disappear in the heat of summer, you can discover the stunning alpine meadows surrounding Bretaye and Les Chaux. Here the air is cooler and the backdrop is breathtaking. I especially love taking a short walk and explore. Looking for good light and lots of different looks for photos that remind you what it feels like to be in the mountains. These are the kind of photos that look good on any wall.
Photos in the forest
I love the forest and one of my favourite outdoor summer photo locations is finding a hidden glade. The trees make for intimate portraits. Escaping into the forest is a good way for getting out of the harsh midday sun and is perfect for my slightly shyer clients. Some of the best places have long avenues of trees and soft light filtering through the canopy. For portraits that really are all about you, there is no better location.
Photos in the vineyard
The summer wouldn’t be complete without an apéro in the vineyards. The UNESCO heritage site, the Lavaux, stretches from Lausanne to Vevey in a tangle of winding paths through emerald green vineyards. From the moment the leaves start to appear to the bright sunny yellows of autumn, this is a place of vibrant colours. Whether it’s hiding on a small path or looking out over the lake, I love to watch the summer storms brewing over the mountains. It makes for a very atmospheric backdrop too with the dark blues against the green. No need to photoshop the colours here, the sky really is that blue.
If I’ve sparked your imagination I’d love to hear about your favourite summer place in Switzerland. To book a lifestyle shoot for families of all ages or a romantic portrait session for just the two of you, get in touch to reserve your outdoor summer photo shoot.
