The Moment of Becoming a Big Sister
I’m a big sister to a little brother, though we’re close in age. I’ve often wondered what it would have felt like to be a bit older when he was born. Maybe I’d have remembered more. That curiosity is one reason I love photographing siblings. Every big sister newborn photo shoot feels different. Each interaction is unique and full of personality.
One of the best things about becoming a big sister is having someone special to care for. That bond is beautiful to capture. I always include older children during newborn sessions. For baby Bora’s eight-day-old photos, his big sister Alya was excited to join in. Just a few years ago, I photographed her at twelve days old. Time really does fly.
The Story of Alya and Bora
I always encourage parents to involve siblings in the newborn photo shoot. Depending on the child’s age, it helps to have a grandparent or friend nearby to keep them engaged. Alya and Bora’s grandparents were visiting, which worked out perfectly.
Alya arrived full of energy, so we jumped right into the shoot. We started with family portraits, then gently set up cushions so she could hold her baby brother—while Mum and Dad stayed close for safety. She was so proud, and we captured some lovely shots.
Later, during lifestyle moments—feeding, burping, cuddles—Alya surprised us. She jumped onto the sofa and asked to help feed her brother. Mum handed over Bora, and Dad stepped in to support her. Alya tucked in beside Dad, and little Bora leaned gently into her.
A Quiet Moment, Full of Emotion
One of my favourite photos from this big sister newborn photo shoot is a closely cropped image full of hands. Bora’s tiny fingers float in the air, unsure. Dad’s hands support, Mum’s comfort, and Alya’s are ready—steady, but aware of how delicate her baby brother is.
This moment radiates tenderness. Every gesture reflects the emotional shift of welcoming a new baby. These are the moments I quietly capture and fully appreciate only later—on my screen or in print.
Capturing the Sibling Bond
Mums know how unpredictable young children can be. Getting the “perfect” photo takes patience, planning, and often a little bribery. I arrive at every session prepared, but I also stay alert for moments that unfold naturally. That’s where the real magic happens.
Staged affection rarely feels real. Kids smile stiffly when asked. But when left to be themselves, they often surprise us. The presence of a “real” camera—and maybe a familiar face—helps create a different energy. It feels special.
With years of experience, I’ve learned that while sibling love is universal, every child expresses it differently. My goal is to create space for natural, genuine reactions. That’s how we capture the true connection between siblings.
