A tender newborn moment at a professional photo shoot in Lausanne

Maternal Moments – A Tender Newborn Moment

One of the most beautiful parts of Lausanne newborn photography is witnessing the bond between a mother and her baby. In this image, I had the joy of capturing a tender newborn moment between Laurie and her daughter, Josslyn. Shot in timeless black and white, it shows a mother completely absorbed in comforting her child. Laurie didn’t pose for this. She didn’t even notice me step behind her. That’s why it feels so natural and so real.

The Story Behind the Image

Laurie had shared a Pinterest board full of baskets, furs, and styled newborn poses. While that isn’t my main approach, I’m always happy to include those setups—provided they are safe and don’t require heavy Photoshop or risky positioning for the baby. I also ask parents to allow part of the session in my lifestyle style. That way, they receive both styled portraits and natural family images.

When I arrived, Laurie and I talked through her ideas. We started with family portraits so Bryan could head to work. After that, we set up the mini-studio in her living room. I always allow plenty of time for newborn photography sessions. Babies need breaks to feed, change, and settle. There’s never any rush.

After a few styled shots, Josslyn needed her mum. Laurie took her to a chair by the window. The light was perfect. As she rocked her baby gently, I switched to a longer lens and waited for the moment they turned towards me. That’s when I captured this photograph—a pure, tender newborn moment that spoke louder than any props could.

Why These Moments Matter

For me, professional family photography is about more than posed portraits. It’s about real, everyday beauty. A mother rocking her newborn. A quiet pause between feeds. The kind of moment you can’t stage, but one you will treasure forever.

When Laurie chose her images for a wall display, this photo stood out alongside other natural family moments. It’s these authentic connections—mother and baby wrapped in love—that she wanted to remember.

What Do You Want From Your Newborn Photography?

If this is your first baby, it can be hard to know what you want from your newborn photography session. Many parents choose a mix of styled portraits and lifestyle moments, like Laurie did. I encourage families to think ahead: what do you want to do with the images? A canvas wall, a keepsake album, or simply a few prints to hold close?

By planning your goals before the session, we can focus on capturing the images you’ll cherish most. And often, the pictures you’ll love for years to come are the ones that show your baby held close, in a simple and tender newborn moment. Get in touch to book your session now.
