Maternity photo in the exotic greenhouse

Botanical Maternity Shoot – Discovering the Exotic

In the lush, dark greens of the jungle-like foliage, a couple stands hand in hand. Sunlight skims across their faces, highlighting the gentle curve of a pregnant belly. The man smiles warmly, while the woman exudes serene happiness. Around them, shadows hint at mystery, but the light brings hope, excitement, and the promise of something new.

This image remains one of my favorite maternity photos. Unlike many of my other sessions, it doesn’t reveal its location immediately. It evokes the dreamy, botanical feel of a Henri Rousseau painting—an artist who adored botanical gardens. More than a portrait of expecting parents, it captures the essence of pregnancy: anticipation, joy, and the quiet wonder of the months to come.

The Story

Ana-Maria’s botanical maternity shoot was scheduled for late November. Short, chilly days and unpredictable weather posed a challenge. To minimize travel and stay comfortable in the late stages of pregnancy, we chose the rich greenery of Geneva’s botanical gardens. The hothouses provided warmth, shelter from rain, and a variety of stunning backdrops.

On the day of the shoot, the sky was a brilliant winter blue, though the wind carried a crisp bite. We started indoors, exploring quiet corners and vibrant plants. I was captivated by the bromeliads and tillandsia, their roots floating elegantly in the air. As we stepped out of the largest greenhouse, Karl helped Ana-Maria down the steps. The side light caught them perfectly. For once, I posed them carefully and stepped back, letting them interact naturally. In that moment—between their words and laughter—I captured this intimate, glowing image.

Outdoor Maternity Photography in Early Winter

Many couples hesitate to schedule a maternity shoot in early winter, but it’s surprisingly simple. I take only one reservation per day during this season, allowing ample time for the shorter daylight. Sessions are easier to reschedule if the weather changes and combining indoor and outdoor locations ensures comfort without rushing.

Through this series, I share the story behind each photo, offering a glimpse into the moments that make maternity photography so special. For now, let’s leave Ana-Maria and Karl in the warm embrace of the greenhouse, surrounded by vibrant greenery and soft light.
