Preparing for Your Family Photo Shoot — FAQ

I love helping families feel relaxed and confident before their photo session. Below are the questions I get most often — and how I handle each one — so you know exactly what to expect and how we’ll work together.

What can you expect from our session?

When we step into the shoot day, I aim to make it feel like an afternoon of connection rather than a stiff “photo appointment.” We’ll move between posed moments and candid play. I’ll guide you where the light is best, but I’ll also prompt movement, laughter, and real interaction, so your images feel alive and authentic.

How do we choose outfits that photograph well?

We can plan your outfits together in advance. I suggest you pick one “anchor” outfit first — something you feel great in — and then build the rest of the family around that. I prefer a palette of 2-4 colors, mixing neutrals with one accent, and using texture (knits, linen, crochet) to add visual interest. Avoid big logos and loud patterns, because it’s nice to see faces, not clothing as the focal point. Neutrals and soft tones usually give us the most timeless results.

How do we keep kids happy and cooperative?

I totally empathise — getting little ones to cooperate can feel tricky! Before the shoot, let’s ensure they’re well rested and fed. I encourage you to bring a few favorite snacks, a comfort item, or something quiet to distract them between shots. During the session, I’ll pause, let them move, play a quick game or tell a silly joke — anything to lighten the mood. I’ve never had to cancel simply because a child wasn’t cooperating; usually, once they see we’re not super strict, they loosen up.

What should we bring with us?

Bring a few small, lightweight props or accessories we can use for layering: a cozy blanket, a favorite toy, hats, or scarves. Also pack a little “emergency kit” — tissues, a comb, safety pins, stain remover wipes. Having a backup outfit for kids in case something messy happens is also wise.

What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

We will confirm our plan a few days ahead, depending on the weather forecast. If skies look grey or rain is expected, I’ll suggest alternatives: perhaps a covered location, indoor spot, or reschedule altogether. I always leave flexibility in my calendar so we can adapt without stress. That way you won’t worry — we’ll still get those great images.

When should we schedule the session, and how long will it last?

I prefer early morning or late afternoon because that “golden hour” light gives softness and warmth. But if your schedule demands midday or an indoor shoot, we can absolutely make it work. A typical session will last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes — enough time for variety without wearing everyone out.

What if someone is sick or we need to cancel?

Life happens — so if someone is under the weather or something prevents us from shooting, we’ll reschedule. I ask that we do that at least 48 hours ahead when possible. If last minute, we’ll do our best to find a new time. I want you to feel comfortable and safe, and I don’t expect you to push through something when it doesn’t feel right.
