Destination wedding in Switzerland

Maria and Samy travelled over from the USA for their outdoor wedding in Vevey, Switzerland. They chose the lovely Grand Hôtel du Lac Vevey for a ceremony outside in the gardens near the lake. The hotel is so unique and beautiful that even the back-up plan would have taken place in stunning surroundings. The couple wanted natural, candid images that captured the atmosphere of the day. To achieve this, they chose only a few formal group shots and opted to have their pre-wedding shoot as a post-wedding shoot a couple of days later. I wasn’t able to meet them beforehand, except over video chat, but knowing exactly what they wanted from their wedding photos in advance was really helpful to me on the day.

Outdoor wedding ceremony

The day of the wedding there was a lot of rain but the forecast showed it clearing up by ceremony time. To try to relieve the pressure, I offered to come to the hotel earlier than agreed so as to be able to set up inside just in case. The hotel staff were wonderful at making sure the outdoor ceremony would be able to go ahead as soon as the rain stopped. The ceremony time was pushed by half an hour, which gave me extra time with Maria and her girls.

As soon as the sun broke free, it was action stations to get the seats and flowers outside and the guests in place. The light in the clear air was just perfect and I was excited to work in such beautiful surroundings. The couple had chosen a symbolic wedding ceremony with words and readings from close family and friends. The odd ‘extra’ guest from the hotel or lake promenade just added to the atmosphere.

The apéro was held poolside and we decided to take the group shots alongside the lake. I was also able to catch the couple alone for a few couple portraits. Even though we had a post-wedding shoot booked, I think it is important to capture a few moments alone on the wedding day itself.

As always the Salle Viennoise was stunningly arranged and I especially loved the photobooth. There were heartfelt speeches, emotional slideshows and a fabulous cake. Lots of wonderful memories to take back home.

TIPS FOR ORGANISING YOUR WEDDING OUTSIDE

For any events outside it is important to have a plan b. This should be a second version of your wedding and in a location that will be equally as special as your first choice. Whether it’s a marquee standing by or an indoor event room that can handle the size of your party, make sure you will be happy with it if the weather is bad.

Unusually, this ceremony was in quite a public spot, which meant diners and passers-by were able to stop and watch. This didn’t bother the family but it is something to consider when planning your own outdoor wedding. From a photographer’s point of view, I tried my best to work around the people in the background but where I couldn’t I aimed to include them as part of the atmosphere of the day. Think about talking to the venue to make sure this is managed according to your wishes.

My last tip for organising your outdoor wedding is to relax and enjoy it. When working with the weather you can’t control everything, so allow things to unfold as they will and roll with the uniqueness of your own day.
